Where to find the BEST Deals at Garage Sales and Yard Sales?

Garage and Yard sales can be a great way to save money if you're looking for rare items, nice used merchandise, good bargains, or making some extra money by flipping your new purchases.

One note of caution to the buyer: buying used doesn't always translate into the great deal everyone comes to expect. Items at a Garage Sale or Yard Sale are used items in various degrees of wear, usually with no cleanliness to them, and probably can be found in an unsanitary condition. Doing your homework and buying wisely is a must.

To make the most of your hard earned money, it's important to have your own plan of attack prior to going out to a local sale.

Here is a list of tips to help you in your quest for hidden garage sale and yard sale bargains:

1. Make a personal buying List on what you are looking for before leaving your house. That way you can limit impulse buying, and buy smarter.

2. Seeking specific items? If you know what you want or need ahead of time, you will know what to ask the sellers for upon your arrival. If you don’t see it at the sale, ask for it anyway.

3. Make a Plan on where you are going each day to save travel time and personal costs to get you more sale visits on each hunting day. Put your route of travel together economically in order of the closest locations to save driving miles getting to each sale you desire. This will make traveling more efficient for you.

4. Sort through local Newspapers and Internet postings for Ads; look for street signs stating Garage Sale or Yard Sale, etc., and check out Craigslist.com for the sales (type in Garage Sale or Yard Sale, in your local area).

5. Many Garage Sale Listings will site examples of the goods they're offering. If the listing cites mainly children's clothing and toys, it probably won't be the best place to look for automobiles, tools, or rare collectables.

6. Looking for Block-Sales, are a time saver because you can park and walk throughout the neighborhood saving you some more time. If one sale does not have the items that interest you, it’s a sure bet that the next sale probably will.

7. You have to Get There First. Because you've planned your route ahead of time, you should have no problem hitting the first sale on your list by opening time of the sale. Some sales open at 12-5:00pm on Fridays (for a Three day event), and other sales open between 6-9:00am on Saturdays. Some sales can be just One day only for either Saturday or just Sunday by itself. Getting there early is a good way to ensure you won't lose out on the best items for sale, and fall victim to a highly picked-over selection. If you’re not an early riser, chose a different technique for your bargain hunting. Arrive at closing time on the last day (when sellers are trying to move un-sold products very quickly). Sellers will often bring prices way down, but keep in mind the selection will probably not be that great.

8. Use your Bargaining skills. Sellers want to get rid of the goods on their tables, so don't be afraid to ask about a lower price if you think something is listed too high. Remember to ask for something you don't see on display. There may be other unseen items in the seller’s garage, in the seller’s house, or with another family member who wants to sell an item you’re interested in.

9. Examine your finds very closely. Check over items carefully, looking for cracks, tears, stains, rips, or missing parts, etc. Pointing out the flaws in the items you're looking to buy can actually help you when you’re negotiating an ideal price with a seller.

10. Bring the right change to the sale to negotiate with. Not having enough money to buy an item or you as the buyer having large money bills (where the seller cannot give you proper change back) could prevent a sale. And while your looking to cash a check, or visit an ATM, your sale item you really wanted may be sold to someone else during your absence.

Things You Should Never Consider Buying At a Garage or Yard Sale!

You've heard of Seller-Beware? How about Buyer-Beware?

Not all items found at Garage or Yard Sales make sense to buy. No matter how much bling-bling is involved, no matter how inexpensive the item is, no mater how nice the sellers were, not every item at these sales is worth buying.

A little common since and practicality should come into effect at the Garage or Yard sale you are visiting. Watch your money and spend money on things you absolutely need or just can't live without. After all, you don't want to end up with things that will become part of your own Garage or Yard Sale someday.

Need a special gift for someone inexpensively? Then cheap bargains are plenty at Garage or Yard Sales. But there are hidden costs or health concerns involving these sales. Certain sale items may be unsanitary, or just not good for you.

The following list represents some of the concerns and items you should consider and not buy at a Garage or Yard Sale:

1.) Perishables: Are people selling food items at the sale? Beware of opened food containers, or food that has gone past its expiration date. There are personal hygiene products, bathroom products, and other personal body products that also have expiration dates you should be aware of. Using products that are past the manufacturers expiration date is unhealthy and could be hazardous to you.
2.) Pet Items: Are the items (Bird House, Dog Toys, Cat Scratch Pole, etc) reasonably clean and worth sanitizing? Animals have a tendency to put germs all over their own things, and drag them over the ground when able. Bacteria and germs will be present with old stains, and prior pet usage. If it's questionable on keeping your own pet safe after buying used cheap pet supplies and furniture at a Garage or Yard Sale, then don't buy these items!
3.) Baby miscellaneous: Baby's deserve a clean world and joyful experience to grow up in. Buying Baby Toys, Bedding, Clothes, Seats, etc can be hazardous to your child. Expect the items you look at to be unclean and sometimes unsanitary. Can the item be cleaned, and is it worth disinfecting? Some toys may have recall or safety alerts on them that you are not aware of. Ask a lot of questions to the sellers, and be safe in buying something that will become very personable to your own family.
4.) Clothing: Clothing from people can be found to be in many different stages of wear. You will not know much about the clothing, how it was used, and in what state the items are in by just looking at them. Even asking questions, may not lead to the proper answers. What if the clothes were brought in from another family, and who knows what was done with them by the prior people. There could be unsanitary concerns by seeing visible marking or stains on the clothes. Is it really worth buying used clothing at a Garage or Yard Sale? Certainly checking out the Sales Clearance Racks at department stores will make you appreciate how many inexpensive clothes there truly are in the world and newly clean (not extra work needed) clothes at that.
5.) Junk Jewelry: Junk jewelry can be found at almost any Garage or Yard Sale. There can also be Costume jewelry involved. And sometime real expensive jewelry can be found for sale. Unless you are a jeweler or professional jewelry expert, be cautious on junk jewelry or used watches. Junk Jewelry may look like they have real gemstones, to include real looking diamonds on some of it. And there are a lot of replica watches out there imitating the more expensive ones. If you're not sure of the item, save your money and don't purchase junk jewelry.
6.) Automobiles: Often an automobile will be offered for sale at a Garage or Yard Sale. How do you feel about making an uninformed car buying decision on a Saturday or Sunday? Are you a qualified mechanic? Most people know very little about cars, besides how to drive them. If you see something that catches your eye, talk to the owner. See if you can test drive the vehicle. Make an offer to hold the vehicle for a couple days to have it checked out by a professional mechanic later. Its no secret that buying something like a used automobile means you will be fixing something on it right away or very soon. Expect to add tires, brakes, fluid changes, transmission concerns, suspension needs, possible body work, and maybe some engine work (serpentine belt, hoses, battery, filters, etc) to your automobile desire. And don't expect the sellers to be totally honest in giving you all the facts on the used automobile for sale.

Remember that some things at Garage or Yard Sales are not worth looking at or buying. Some caution and investigation should be considered before making certain purchases. There is safety, sanitary, and common sense ideals we must use when reviewing someone else's used items.

Keep in mind that most items shouldn't always be ignored at the sale. If an item your interested in can be verified as being brand-new or unused (i.e. in original packaging, still disassembled, etc.), or you feel very comfortable on an item, then your making a better buying decision.

This article is called “Security Tips for your safe and successful Garage or Yard Sale”.

From the “Key to Additional Income” series, comes another informative view on having a Garage and Yard Sale, knowing how to prepare yourself (the seller) in advance with some security measures, and to not be ripped off by your new perspective customers.

There really are a lot of good honest people out there, and generally we go though life without many problems. We marvel at the bad news we see from the TV about the local crime, and organized efforts by some people to take advantage of the good, honest, hard-working folks in society. There are a lot of bad stories and unusual things that happen in the world around us.

One can not put his or her heads in the sand and think life is always carefree and safe at a Garage or Yard Sale either.

Anytime you have people (customers) coming onto your property to visit for your sale, you need to be aware of all activities and be cautious during the sale days.

If you plan to host a Garage or Yard Sale yourself, this article concerns the safety and security of your own sales event on the sale day’s you are planning.

Tips to having a safe and successful Garage or Yard Sale (at your own place):

1. Beware of people who want to cheap you by helping you total your prices on any item, and what money they actually have. As the seller, you have to do your own counting of the sales price totals for each of your customers. Your customers will sometimes make honest mistakes on counting the pricing for you, and some other customers will intentionally try to take advantage of you by saving themselves some money. Since your pricing is very low as it is, take precautions to keep aware of your potential money.
2. Don’t do a Garage Sale alone. Get some help. Use another person to answer extra questions, and help watch what’s going on during the sale. Do not work your sale alone, unless you expect to do multiple challenging things during your sale. Having friends or family members present can help maintain better security, and keep a watchful eye on your items for sale, the money your making, and your other property not in the sale but nearby (like in the garage).
3. Watch your Money Box, Money Envelopes, etc. or whatever you use to keep your starting change, and what money you’ve made that day. While you are being distracted by a customers question on how to explain a particular sale item, your money-box may end up missing. What about when a customer says “can you plug this in to test it, or can you get batteries for this to see if this items works”. A trip into your house, leaving customers unattended could be inviting security problems.
4. Be aware and be ready for pushy people, who might want you to be distracted or try to get better deals you didn’t expect. There are all sorts of people with different personalities, and tactics. Some people will try to intimidate you with their aggressiveness and personal demeanor. Set a fair price, be willing to negotiate, and stand your ground when needed.
5. Watch for group tactics, like a man and woman team, or an adult using a child to distract you while they have dishonest intentions at your sale. Single customers are usually more manageable. Other people, who show up in pairs and groups, make it harder to keep on top of this approach. Have extra help at your sale to help you manage more activity during the sale days.

It's also important to price items correctly. Keep your prices “Low”, but fair. After all you want to sell all the items you have in your Garage or Yard Sale, don’t you?

Price items in a helpful manner to avoid more small change in your Money Box, and wasted time counting the small change.

Price items in even cents or dollar amounts, such as $1.00, or $10.00, or $.50 even. Avoid using prices such as $.58 cents, or $8.65 cents.
Less time dealing with your change means less time going to the store or bank to get more change that’s needed.

Allow customers to give you more paper bills (by pricing in whole dollar amounts) in exchange for your sale items, which will give you less change to deal with.

Less time dealing with change means less time for a swindle or dishonest practice which can occur when you’re distracted.

Garage and Yard Sale bargains can be a great source of additional income if you chose to have one, or finding rare items and other wonderful bargains if you like looking for them.

In order to make the best of any Garage or Yard Sale that you may be planning, you need a plan of attack. You need some preparation and research time.

Garage and Yard sales are plentiful, and usually can be found at any time of the year. Yes one would generally think that a Garage or Yard sale typically would be found when spring arrives, and maybe ends when winter comes. But we're going to share with you some secrets, to find these bargains at any time of the year.

Your Health and Happiness at your Garage or Yard Sale: Do you want to be smiling at the end of your garage sale? Do you want to sell more items at your Garage Sale than the other Garage Sale folks out there?

What really is the secret of having people stop and buy all of your sale items? As a seller, having a Garage Sale, you have to price everything very low! Leave the sentimental feelings, and what you may have paid for the item previously, because no one is going to pay a lot for a used item. The exception to this will be things like valuable collectables or more expensive items like furniture, cars, etc.

Are You Selling Collectables? Your collectables should not be sold at your own garage or yard sale, unless you are very familiar with the values and market interest on your collectables. Save your collectables separately for eBay or a local collectable collector. Do market research to see what your collectables are actually worth. Not sure where to find the value of your things? Try the Salvation Army, Disabled Veterans, eBay, or Garage Sale Pricing Lists (Google the item on the internet).You've heard stories of expensive paintings and collectables bought at a local sales, only to be resold for a large profit for those knowledgeable folks coming to that garage or yard sale. It does happen sometimes.

When is the best Time to have a Garage or Yard Sale? The best time to have a Garage or Yard Sale usually is from April through October of the year (depending of course where you live). In warmer locales, these sales are held anytime usually. Observe weather conditions in advance and have you sale on nice projected days, where rain or extreme high heat won't keep customers from finding your sale. What days are the best? Considering most folks are in the working phase of their lives, most garage or yard sales should be planned between Fridays through Sunday (Saturday will be your best sale day). The hours between 7am-7pm work best, depending when sunrise or sunset is for you. What is the best time for sales? Usually 4pm-7pm on Friday, 7am-12:00pm on Saturday, and 11am-3pm (people will be in church early, or will stop at a later time for best bargains on Sunday afternoon. However Sundays will present slower traffic overall).

It’s been awhile since we’ve spoke, as things have been busy for the family here. We added some additional things into the store every week or so, with the vendors we have now. We are reviewing for new vendors currently and hope to add more interesting useful things soon.

We continue to go to Garage Sales and look for bargains to pass to you. You can still find many new and exciting things in both Used and New in our store.

Not everything comes from Garage Sales for us, as we have brand new items for you, your house, and other new extras from many vendors.

As a note to things: Seems sometimes a couple of our many vendors, run short or run out of stock on a particular item or two (on the New items), and don’t always plan in advance to keep their inventory up. We work closely with our vendors to monitor their status and actions, and try to eliminate any inconviences for you (our customer). If in fact an item should be out of stock, you will be asked if you want to wait for the item on back-order or be immediately refunded your money. We want your business, and your happiness is important to us. As a reminder, an item being out of stock is very rare, and it only happens on an extreme rare basis.

We offer Google and PayPal check out's, if you are a user of these programs. You can quickly sign into your existing account, and then move fast through your checkout process. Google checkout takes about any Credit Card, and PayPal also allows most Credit Cards. In addition PayPal will allow you to use a Personal Check throught their eCheck system. Keep in mind that a Personal Check (if used for your purchase) is held by PayPal for 3-5 business days pending the clearing of the check.
